As Kenya continues to endure heavy rainfall, the nation faces dire consequences from widespread flooding, disrupting lives and livelihoods.

The relentless downpours have led to severe flooding, leaving many unable to carry out their daily activities as their properties are submerged underwater.

In Kiambu, Charles Otieno, the proprietor of a car repair shop, persists in serving customers despite navigating through pools of water, driven by his commitment to support his family.

The flooding not only hinders her ability to work but also instills anxiety about what lies ahead.

In response to the crisis, the government has urged residents in flood-prone areas to evacuate, as heavy rains have resulted in the loss of 238 lives in recent weeks.

“We are stranded. I have a garage since the rain started, it is now three weeks. My vehicles are here. They are stuck, I have nothing to eat.” Charles Otieno, Garage Owner said.

According to data from the interior ministry, over 200,000 individuals have been impacted by the floods, resulting in the displacement of more than 40,000 households.

The government has reported that over 1,000 schools have been affected by the heavy rains and flooding, prompting the allocation of funds for repair and renovation efforts.

Friday, May 10, has been designated as a public holiday to mourn the 238 individuals who lost their lives due to the ongoing flooding crisis.

President William Ruto announced that the day will be commemorated through national tree planting activities aimed at mitigating the adverse effects of climate change.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued warnings indicating that the rainfall is expected to persist until the conclusion of May.
