Chad’s military leader, Mahamat Deby Itno, emerged victorious in the recent presidential election, as per preliminary results unveiled on Thursday. However, his main rival, Prime Minister Succès Masra, contested the outcome.
The electoral commission of Chad expedited the release of results, which revealed that Deby Itno secured over 61% of the vote, while Masra trailed with just above 18.5%. The announcement triggered gunfire in the capital.
Originally scheduled for May 21, the preliminary results were disclosed earlier than anticipated.
Following three years of military governance, Chad conducted its long-awaited presidential election, widely anticipated to favor the incumbent. Deby Itno, also known as Mahamat Idriss Deby, ascended to power after his father’s demise in 2021 during combat against insurgents.
Masra took to Facebook hours before the official announcement, accusing the authorities of planning to manipulate the election results.
