The Health Minister clarified that the proposed mandatory health insurance policy for non-resident visitors to Ghana is still being reviewed by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) and has not yet received cabinet approval.
Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye explained that despite earlier reports indicating a commencement date of July 1, 2024, the policy requiring foreign nationals to purchase health insurance ranging from $45 to $270 before entry is a proposal from the NHIA, not yet a finalized government policy.
In a press release dated June 18, 2024, Dr. Okoe Boye emphasized, “The recent announcement regarding mandatory health insurance for non-resident visitors is a proposal from the NHIA and not a government policy.”
He stressed that the intention behind the proposal is to ensure access to healthcare for foreign visitors while in Ghana, but reiterated that it has not undergone cabinet discussion or approval.
Dr. Okoe Boye urged the public to disregard any misinformation suggesting the policy has been finalized and its implementation decided. He assured that any policy would undergo thorough scrutiny and adhere to all necessary protocols before potential implementation, ensuring it benefits the people of Ghana.
