A notorious Haitian gang launched a violent attack on a police station in Gressier, Port-au-Prince, resulting in the deaths of numerous police officers, according to reports.
The assault, reportedly led by gang leader Jimmy “Barbecue” Cherizier and members of the “Vivre Ensemble” coalition, began on Sunday, June 30. At least 20 officers were killed in the attack, with the Bougoy Gang also reportedly involved, as per Haiti Libre.
In response, Haitian police launched a strong counter-offensive that resulted in casualties among the gang members. Haiti Libre mentioned the capture of Bougoy leader Ti Bébé Bougoy, who had previously boasted about his gang’s strength compared to the police.
Reports indicated that the gang used heavy machinery to damage the police station, equipment that authorities subsequently seized.
Earlier reports from June 2022 had detailed the gang’s recruitment tactics, which allegedly included rounding up homeless and vulnerable teenagers for involvement in gang conflicts.
