A Ghanaian Member of Parliament has cautioned his colleagues against passing unfavorable laws, citing the violent anti-tax protests in Kenya where demonstrators stormed parliament.
The recent anti-government protests in Kenya have resulted in at least 39 deaths and 361 injuries, as reported by the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR). Activists have launched a new round of protests this week.
This death toll, announced by the KNCHR on Monday, is nearly double the figure previously released by the government. The protests were sparked by a series of unpopular tax increases, which have since been withdrawn.
Addressing his colleagues, the Ghanaian lawmaker emphasized the importance of avoiding a similar situation in Ghana.
“Kenyan public are beating up Members of Parliament for passing bad laws. Mr Speaker, it is a serious matter. I saw colleagues Members of Parliament beaten to a pulp.” He said on Tuesday, July 3.
“Mr Speaker, advise us on how to pass good laws to avoid being beaten by the public. We should be worried. It is not a laughing matter. It is not a joke.”
