The first African Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has confessed he never expected to live to the age of 90.
Soyinka shared this during a Q&A session with students at his ARI residence in Ijegba, Abeokuta.
Reflecting on his life experiences over the past 90 years, Soyinka revealed he never anticipated reaching this milestone. He explained that his decision to become a writer was driven by a desire to address the inaccuracies in the stories he heard while growing up.
Addressing a question about his infamous entry into a radio station during the military era, he clarified, “I didn’t break in; I sneaked in. The radio station was withholding something that belonged to the people, and I decided to retrieve it. If broadcast, it would have demoralized the populace and reinforced a culture of brutality.”
Soyinka also criticized Nigerians for frequently condemning the state without introspecting. He argued that crimes such as kidnapping and robbery stem not from poverty or inequality, but from selfishness and a desire for luxury.
