Eleven months after seizing power in a coup, there are increasing calls for Gabon’s transitional President Brice Oligui Nguema to run for office.
Nguema, who assumed the presidency in September last year after deposing President Ali Bongo, whose family had governed the country for over five decades, has yet to announce his candidacy.
Radio France International reported that on Saturday, Deputy Prime Minister Alexandre Barro Chambrier declared he would not be running for president.
Instead, he and his party, the Rally for the Homeland and Modernity (RPM), would support Nguema if he chose to run in the presidential elections scheduled for August 2025.
The transition charter allows Oligui Nguema to be a candidate, unlike other leaders. While his actions suggest he may intend to run, he has not yet officially declared his candidacy.
