Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has confirmed the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, with Hamas attributing the attack to Israel.
Haniyeh was in Tehran for the inauguration of President Masoud Pezeshkian when the incident occurred.
Iran has not disclosed the specifics surrounding Haniyeh’s death, and the Revolutionary Guard is investigating the matter.
This follows a deadly Hamas attack on October 7 that resulted in 1,200 fatalities and around 250 hostages, prompting Israel to vow to eliminate Haniyeh and other Hamas leaders.
An Israeli military spokesperson has not yet responded to inquiries.
Hamas claims that Haniyeh was killed in a Zionist airstrike on his home in Tehran after attending the inauguration of Iran’s new president.
Haniyeh has been living in exile in Qatar since leaving the Gaza Strip in 2019.
