Controversial cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, will be released from the Kirikiri Correctional Centre on August 5, 2024, after serving a six-month sentence for naira abuse.

A reliable source from the prison and Bobrisky’s lawyer, Ayo Olumofin, confirmed the release date to our correspondent on Tuesday. “Bobrisky will be released on Monday, August 5,” the anonymous prison source stated. Olumofin added, “Yes, it’s about that time for him to be released. There is nothing specific planned for his release. I might not go as I’m engaged outside Lagos. Maybe other lawyers will go.”

Bobrisky was sentenced on April 12, 2024, by Justice Abimbola Awogboro, now an Appellate Court judge, for tampering with the naira by spraying it at social events. Despite appealing the conviction, it is unlikely the appeal will be heard before the end of his sentence.

Bobrisky faced four counts of naira abuse brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The charges stem from incidents on March 24, 2024, and between July and August 2023, where Bobrisky was seen spraying naira notes at various events. The EFCC’s Suleiman Suleiman stated these actions violated Section 21 (1) of the Central Bank Act 2007.

During his trial, Bobrisky pleaded guilty and admitted his actions. EFCC operative Bolaji Temitope provided evidence from social media videos showing Bobrisky spraying naira notes at events. Following the review of the facts, Justice Awogboro found Bobrisky guilty as charged.

In his defense, Bobrisky, also known as “Mummy of Lagos,” expressed ignorance of the naira law, stating, “I am a social media influencer with over five million followers. My Lord, in all honesty, I was not aware of the naira law.”
