A 24-year-old Ugandan, Tom Ssekamwa, is scheduled to appear in court today for a bail ruling after his arrest for possessing a collection of sex toys and lubricants. Ssekamwa was apprehended in Masvingo on August 1, following a tip-off to the police about his possession of these items.
According to the National Prosecution Authority (NPA), Ssekamwa was arrested at a backpackers’ lodge in Masvingo.
The incident occurred after law enforcement acted on the received tip, searched his accommodation, and allegedly found sex toys and a lubricant in his bag.
Under Zimbabwe’s censorship and entertainment control laws, the importation or possession of sex toys is prohibited, as they are considered indecent and harmful to public morals. The police have charged Ssekamwa under these regulations.
Previously, the possession and sale of adult toys have led to legal troubles in Zimbabwe.
In 2022, Ayanda Unity Mponda faced legal consequences for selling similar items and was sentenced to 24 months in prison, with part of the sentence suspended pending community service.
In another case, Stephanie Chiyangwa, daughter of Zimbabwean mogul Phillip Chiyangwa, was arrested in 2016 for selling such items but was not prosecuted.
