The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Flagbearer for the 2024 election, John Dramani Mahama, has vowed to hold individuals accountable for any misappropriation of funds related to the uncompleted Keta Port project if he is elected President.
Speaking during the final part of his tour in the Keta Constituency of the Volta Region, close to the proposed port site, Mahama highlighted that the government has allocated $8 million from the dividends earned through the Meridian Port Services (MPS) deal, a project initiated by the NDC government, for the construction of an administrative block for what he termed as a “non-existent port.”
Mahama pointed out that the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GAPOHA), a partner in the MPS deal, has received a share of the dividends from the new port, totaling $280 million since its establishment.
He stressed the importance of conducting thorough research and needs assessments before embarking on new port projects, especially between Tema Harbour and the Port of Lomé, to avoid repeating mistakes like those made with the Boankra inland port project in the Ashanti Region, which he referred to as a “white elephant.”
Mahama recounted how $70 million was initially allocated to the Boankra port and noted that $8 million has been earmarked for the construction of the Keta port’s administrative block. He assured that if given the mandate, his administration would audit the Keta port project and investigate any misuse of funds, holding responsible parties accountable.
