Nigeria has charged 10 individuals with treason in connection to last month’s #EndBadGovernance protests. The suspects, who face accusations of criminal conspiracy, subversion, and cybercrime, appeared in court on Monday, September 2nd.
Authorities allege that the nine men and one woman acted in collaboration with 70-year-old British citizen Andrew Martin Wynee, who is wanted for allegedly attempting to overthrow the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and for financing terrorism.
A decision on their bail application is expected on September 11th.
In early August, protests against economic hardship erupted across several Nigerian states, despite President Tinubu’s calls for an end to the demonstrations, which were met with a harsh response from security forces. Reports indicate that around 120 people were arrested during the protests.
Amnesty International condemned the charges, criticizing the government for prioritizing the punishment of protesters rather than addressing the need to investigate the deaths of several demonstrators.
