Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine was seriously injured after being shot in the leg during a clash with police near Kampala, according to his party, the National Unity Platform. Video footage showed Wine, also known as Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, being assisted into a car by supporters after the incident in Bulindo, Wakiso District. The nature of the injury remains unclear, whether caused by a bullet or a tear gas canister, but images depicted a bleeding wound just below his left knee.
Wine, who ran against President Yoweri Museveni in the 2021 presidential election, has frequently encountered violent confrontations with police, though this marks the first time he has been injured in such a manner. He is currently receiving medical attention at a local hospital.
The police stated that the altercation occurred after Wine defied advice against holding a street procession. They announced that an investigation into the incident would be carried out.
Wine’s party condemned the event as an assassination attempt. As a popular figure among Uganda’s youth, the former entertainer-turned-politician has faced numerous challenges since entering politics, including blocked rallies, harassment, and physical assaults by security forces.
Museveni, who has been in power since 1986, has resisted calls to retire, and Uganda has yet to experience a peaceful transfer of power since its independence in 1962
