Passengers at Kenya’s main international airport have been left stranded after workers launched a protest on Wednesday against a proposed government deal with a foreign investor. Flights have remained grounded as a result of the demonstration.

The government’s agreement with India’s Adani Group involves renovating Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, including the construction of an additional runway and terminal, in exchange for the company managing the airport for 30 years.

The Kenya Airport Workers Union, which called the strike, expressed concerns that the deal would result in job losses and worsen employment conditions for those who remain.

Kenya Airways has warned passengers of potential delays and cancellations due to the strike at the Nairobi-based airport.

Although a previous strike was called off for talks with the government, last week’s sightings of unfamiliar individuals inspecting the airport alongside officials sparked worries that the deal was moving forward.

On Monday, the High Court temporarily suspended the deal’s implementation pending a legal case brought by the Law Society and the Kenya Human Rights Commission.
