Nigerians have turned to social media to share their thoughts after the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, introduced the OneNigeria/UnityFabric, which she described as a representation of national unity.
During the unveiling ceremony at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja on Monday, September 16, Mrs. Tinubu mentioned that the idea for a national fabric came from her visit to Zimbabwe in December 2023, where she observed a similar initiative. She announced that the new national fabric would be worn nationwide in celebration of Independence Day on October 1, 2024.
Mrs. Tinubu also revealed that the fabric would be mass-produced by local manufacturers, aiming to support the domestic textile industry, create jobs, and strengthen the economy.
This announcement has received mixed reactions on social media. While some praise the initiative, others believe the timing is inappropriate, pointing out that many Nigerians are currently struggling with hunger, unemployment, and a rising cost of living.
