Whitney Houston’s legendary 1994 concert in South Africa, held after President Nelson Mandela’s historic election, is coming to theaters this fall. The performance has been fully remastered into a theatrical release titled “The Concert for a New South Africa (Durban),” as announced by Houston’s estate, Sony Music Entertainment, and Trafalgar Releasing.

The film, featuring the previously unreleased Durban show, will have a limited theatrical run starting October 23. It precedes a live album release, also titled “The Concert for a New South Africa (Durban),” scheduled for November 8.

Pat Houston, the singer’s sister-in-law and estate executor, stated, “She loved South Africa; she loved the people, and she loved Nelson Mandela… We are thrilled to release this film to her fans and the people of South Africa.”

The concert, part of a series of performances in Durban, Johannesburg, and Cape Town, celebrated the end of apartheid and drew over 200,000 attendees. Proceeds supported local children’s charities through Houston’s foundation.

The concert film has been enhanced with 4K video and improved audio and will be shown in around 900 cinemas across 25 countries. Rickey Minor, Houston’s long-time musical director, recalled the event as life-changing, with an electric atmosphere celebrating the end of apartheid.

Earlier in 1994, Houston had won three Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year for “The Bodyguard” soundtrack. Over her career, she sold over 200 million records and received numerous accolades, including six Grammys. The live album will feature her iconic hits like “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” “How Will I Know,” and the unreleased track “Love Is.”

Marc Allenby, CEO of Trafalgar Releasing, emphasized the concert’s enduring message of hope and unity, promising audiences a powerful experience on the big screen.
