Mozambique Elections: Irregularities in Vote Counting and Unjustified Result Alterations at Polling – EU

EU election observers have reported that some voting results in Mozambique have been tampered with, as unrest in the country continues to escalate.

Thousands of opposition supporters took to the streets on Monday, led by independent presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, who accuses security forces of being responsible for the deaths of his lawyer, Elvino Dias, and political ally Paulo Guambe. Both were killed in the same car last Friday, but authorities deny involvement.

Official results from the general election, held on October 9, are expected by Friday. However, the EU observer mission revealed “irregularities during counting and unjustified alteration of election results at polling station and district levels.” The mission urged Mozambique’s electoral bodies to ensure transparency and credibility during the vote tabulation process.

The US-based International Republican Institute also reported instances of vote-buying, inflated voter rolls in Frelimo strongholds, and voter intimidation. Meanwhile, Mozambique’s electoral commission has been unable to publish results on its website due to a cyber-attack.

Venâncio Mondlane, who is backed by opposition party Podemos, has already declared himself the winner of the election and claims that the deaths of his aides were politically motivated.

He led protests across Mozambique, accusing the government of election fraud and condemning the killings. In response, police used live ammunition, tear gas, armored vehicles, and police dogs to disperse demonstrators in Maputo, where Dias and Guambe were killed. Protests also spread to Beira and Nampula, leading to arrests and injuries.

Shops closed during the protests but began reopening on Tuesday. Mondlane has called for further demonstrations later in the week, while the funeral for Dias is scheduled for Wednesday.

International pressure is mounting on Mozambican authorities to investigate the killings. Former Mozambican President Armando Guebuza, the African Union, the UN, the US, and the EU have all condemned the violence, with acclaimed author Mia Couto labeling the killings a “crime against the nation.”

Mozambique has been ruled by Frelimo since its independence from Portugal, but the upcoming election will bring a new president as Filipe Nyusi steps down after two terms.

Frelimo’s candidate is Daniel Chapo, while Mondlane, Renamo leader Ossufo Momade, and Mozambique Democratic Movement candidate Lutero Simango are his main challengers.
