Ekperipke Ekpo, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), announced that President Bola Tinubu is prioritizing the conversion of fuel stations across Nigeria into compressed natural gas (CNG) outlets.
Speaking after Wednesday’s federal executive council (FEC) meeting, which was chaired by the president, Ekpo revealed that Tinubu issued a directive through the minister of information regarding the promotion of CNG.
Ekpo highlighted the president’s commitment to expanding the CNG initiative, noting that a presidential committee has been established to drive the project. “CNG is here to stay because it’s safer, cheaper, and environmentally friendly,” he said.
He further explained that Tinubu’s plan involves converting most filling stations in the country to accommodate CNG, offering conversion kits to enable vehicles to switch to the alternative fuel.
Ekpo emphasized the cost-saving benefits of CNG, stating that while a litre of petrol might cost N1,000, the equivalent amount of CNG would only be N200, saving consumers N800. He expressed confidence in the president’s commitment to driving the CNG program nationwide, taking full advantage of Nigeria’s abundant natural gas resources.
Earlier, on October 22, President Tinubu highlighted that Nigerians would have the option of purchasing either premium motor spirit (PMS) at N1,000 per litre or CNG at N200 per standard cubic meter.
