Botswana’s ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) has reportedly lost its parliamentary majority in the latest election, as per updates from the private Mmegi newspaper and state radio, which have tallied over half of the constituencies.
Despite predictions of a close contest, analysts had expected that a split among opposition parties would ultimately benefit President Mokgweetsi Masisi’s BDP, in power since Botswana’s independence from Britain in 1966. However, preliminary results covering 36 of the 61 constituencies show opposition parties gaining a majority of seats, according to Mmegi and state radio.
So far, the BDP has only secured one out of the 36 constituencies, while the opposition coalition, the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC), has claimed 23. A total of 31 seats is required for a majority in parliament.
Known for its stability, diamond wealth, and social programs, Botswana offers free healthcare and education to its 2.3 million citizens and is the world’s top diamond producer by value. Yet, recent dips in the diamond market have put pressure on national revenue, underscoring the country’s need for economic diversification.
