On his final day in South Africa, anti-monarchy protesters confronted Prince William during his visit to Kalk Bay in Cape Town.

As the Prince of Wales, 42, greeted locals this morning, Nov. 7, two protesters held signs and shouted, “Go home now,” with one banner reading, “William, you have no sovereignty in our country.”

The protest was the first sign of unrest during William’s four-day trip for the 2024 Earthshot Awards, which culminated in the ceremony on Nov. 6. Despite the protest, Prince William remained focused on the engagement, meeting with local fishermen and highlighting the work of 2023 Earthshot Finalist Abalobi.

Supporters in the crowd responded with cheers of “We love you, William,” attempting to drown out the lone protesters.

One protester called on the Prince to “hand back what your grandmother stole from us,” while some local fishermen expressed frustration that only representatives from Abalobi had been invited to meet the Prince, saying the organization does not represent the broader fishing community.

Rifiek Isaac, a deputy chair of a small-scale fishing cooperative, remarked, “We would have loved to meet the Prince. It’s not about him; we just don’t like that company using our harbor. We fish here.”
