The European Union has decided to recall its ambassador from Niger after the country’s military leadership raised concerns over the handling of humanitarian aid intended for flood victims, according to a statement by the European External Action Service (EEAS) on Saturday.
The junta accused the EU envoy of distributing a €1.3 million fund among several international NGOs in a manner it claimed lacked transparency and excluded collaboration with Nigerien authorities.
In response, the military government announced an audit to investigate the fund’s management.
“The European Union strongly disagrees with the accusations and the reasoning provided by the transitional authorities,” the EEAS stated, confirming the ambassador would return to Brussels for consultations.
Niger has been under military rule since a coup in 2023, marking a period of tense relations with international partners.
