Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has firmly rejected calls to stay silent on matters related to the 2024 general elections, following criticism of his endorsement of NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Critics, including Movement for Change leader Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, have argued that as a statesman, Kufuor should avoid making public endorsements.
However, speaking at a campaign event in Abuakwa South at the Ofori Panin Palace on November 27, Kufuor defended his position, reaffirming his confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s leadership and capabilities.
Addressing the backlash, Kufuor said, “I am being criticized for sharing my views because I am considered a statesman. But with age comes experience and wisdom,” emphasizing that his political foundation remains deeply tied to the NPP.
Explaining his support, Kufuor stated, “The New Patriotic Party is my political home, and it is through this party that I became President. Moreover, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, whom I consider a protégé, has been elected as the party’s flagbearer.”
Reflecting on Dr. Bawumia’s contributions during his presidency, Kufuor lauded his economic expertise, particularly during challenging financial times. “As part of the Bank of Ghana team during my tenure, Dr. Bawumia played a critical role in revitalizing the economy when Ghana was facing severe financial distress,” he said.
Kufuor concluded by urging Ghanaians to rally behind the NPP in the 2024 elections, emphasizing that Dr. Bawumia’s leadership is vital for the nation’s progress.
