Today, millions of Ghanaians are making their voices heard in a pivotal election that underscores the strength of the nation’s democratic foundation. This marks Ghana’s ninth general election since the return to multiparty democracy in 1992. Voters will choose their next president and members of parliament for the 276 constituencies across the country.
A Nation at the Polls
Polling stations nationwide opened at 7:00 AM and will remain accessible until 5:00 PM. With over 18 million registered voters, the election has drawn significant attention both locally and internationally. The outcome will shape the country’s political and developmental trajectory for the coming years.
The Presidential Contest
The presidential race is a showdown between two political heavyweights. Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, 61, of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), aims to extend his party’s tenure, while former President John Dramani Mahama, 65, of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), seeks to reclaim the presidency after his term ended in 2017.
In addition to these frontrunners, 12 candidates are vying for the highest office. Notable contenders include Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, a former NPP stalwart now running as an independent, and Christian Kwabena Andrews of the Ghana Union Party (GUM). Other candidates include Daniel Augustus Lartey Jnr of the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP), Kofi Akpaloo of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), and several independent hopefuls like George Twum-Barima-Adu and Nana Kwame Bediako.
To secure the presidency, a candidate must obtain more than 50% of the votes cast, plus one. If no candidate achieves this, a runoff election will follow.
Ensuring a Smooth and Transparent Election
The Electoral Commission (EC) has taken comprehensive steps to guarantee a seamless voting process. With 40,648 polling stations established across the country, the commission has worked tirelessly to prepare for the influx of voters.
Mrs. Jean Mensa, the EC Chairperson, reassured citizens that every measure has been taken to uphold the credibility, transparency, and fairness of the election. She urged voters to engage in the process peacefully and responsibly, emphasizing the EC’s commitment to safeguarding the integrity of Ghana’s democracy.
As Ghanaians cast their ballots, the world watches, hopeful for a peaceful and transformative outcome in this historic election.
