The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to accept the outcome of the recently concluded general elections, urging the party to prioritize national unity and peace.
In a press conference held in Accra, the NDC’s General Secretary accused the NPP of attempting to delay the formal transition process despite the apparent verdict from voters. He emphasized that any reluctance to concede defeat could heighten tensions across the country and undermine Ghana’s democratic credentials.
“The people of Ghana have spoken, and their will must be respected. The continued refusal by the NPP to accept the results is causing unnecessary anxiety,” the NDC official stated.
The Electoral Commission of Ghana has yet to officially declare the winner of the presidential election, but preliminary results and projections from independent analysts reportedly favor the NDC’s candidate.
In response, the NPP has dismissed the NDC’s call, arguing that legal processes to address alleged irregularities in some constituencies are still ongoing. The party’s spokesperson insisted that their commitment to a fair and transparent process should not be misconstrued as an unwillingness to concede.
The NDC, however, urged the NPP to avoid litigation tactics that could delay the transition and fuel public unrest. “Our focus must be on ensuring a smooth handover and safeguarding the peace of our nation,” the NDC spokesperson said.
Ghana has long been hailed as a beacon of democracy in Africa, and political watchers have expressed hope that both parties will work together to uphold the country’s reputation for peaceful transitions of power.
