The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expelled 280 members, including Cynthia Morrison, the sitting Member of Parliament for Agona West.
The expulsions stem from allegations that these individuals defied party rules by supporting Ms. Morrison’s decision to run as an independent candidate in the 2024 elections after her defeat in the party’s internal primaries.
In a statement signed by constituency chairman Alhaji Gibrine Tanko, the affected members were officially informed of their removal from the party. The letter outlined that they are no longer recognized as NPP members and are prohibited from holding party positions, attending party events, or using the party’s symbols and flag.
Ms. Morrison’s independent bid reportedly attracted backing from some constituency executives, polling station representatives, and ward coordinators, further intensifying the internal fallout.
The NPP’s decisive action highlights its efforts to uphold party discipline and address defections that could jeopardize its unity ahead of the December 7 elections.
