Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President and the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate for the 2024 elections, attributed the party’s loss to widespread voter apathy.
He noted that approximately two million NPP supporters failed to vote in the December 7, 2024, elections, resulting in the party’s most significant defeat in Ghana’s Fourth Republic.
During a meeting at his residence in Accra on December 23, 2024, attended by committee chairpersons and members, Dr. Bawumia expressed disbelief at the low voter turnout, questioning how such a large number of supporters stayed home.
“It felt as though our people held a nationwide meeting and decided not to vote,” he remarked.
Despite the disappointing outcome, Dr. Bawumia extended his gratitude to the manifesto subcommittees for their efforts in crafting a comprehensive policy document. He praised the manifesto’s transformational policies, emphasizing that the party presented a solid plan to Ghanaians.
He encouraged a thorough review of the election results to understand the reasons behind the voter apathy, announcing plans for comprehensive research as part of the party’s reorganization strategy.
“I deeply appreciate the dedication and hard work that went into producing such an impressive document,” Dr. Bawumia said, assuring members that their efforts were not in vain.
He urged the manifesto team not to view their work as wasted, expressing optimism about the future. “God willing, this document will serve us well in the years to come,” he assured.
Also in attendance was Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, who chaired the Manifesto Committee for the 2024 Bawumia Campaign.
