A thick cloud of smoke still hovers over Kantamanto Market in Accra after a catastrophic fire ravaged the bustling market early on Thursday, January 2, 2025.
Once a hub of activity, the market is now a scene of devastation and sorrow, as traders sift through the wreckage of their livelihoods. Many of them, who had invested their life savings into their businesses, stand among the smoldering ruins of their stalls, desperately trying to recover whatever they can.
The fire, fueled by the highly flammable materials common in many stalls, spread quickly, causing widespread damage. Despite the brave efforts of firefighters, much of the market was destroyed before the flames were brought under control.
The exact cause of the fire is still being investigated, but for the traders, the immediate focus is on rebuilding their businesses and lives. Many are appealing for government aid, while others are seeking support from their local communities.
Below are more photos and videos of the destruction:
Already, the elephants have begun their usual stinking politics with the Kantamanto fire incident. It's clear some of them are suspects. There must be a swift investigation to bring this foolishness to an end. Smh 😒 pic.twitter.com/5YerGnSySZ
