Beninese-American actor Djimon Hounsou has revealed that he is facing financial struggles despite a Hollywood career spanning over two decades and earning critical acclaim.

In a recent interview on CNN’s African Voices Changemakers, Hounsou expressed frustration at being underpaid and struggling to make ends meet, even with an impressive résumé that includes two Oscar nominations for his roles in Blood Diamond and In America.

“I’m still struggling to make a living,” Hounsou admitted. “I’ve been in the filmmaking business for over two decades with two Oscar nominations and many blockbuster films, and yet, I’m still struggling financially. I’m definitely underpaid.”

Hounsou also spoke candidly about his experiences with racism in Hollywood. He shared a striking example of being overlooked for an Oscar nomination, despite receiving a Golden Globe nomination for the same performance.

“I was nominated for the Golden Globe, but they ignored me for the Oscars because they thought that I had just come off the boat and the streets,” he explained. “Even though I successfully did that, they just didn’t feel like I was an actor to whom they should pay any respect.”

The actor emphasized that while there has been some progress in promoting diversity, systemic racism remains a significant challenge in the industry.

“So, this conceptual idea of diversity still has a long way to go,” Hounsou said. “Systemic racism won’t change like that anytime soon.”

The revelations from the veteran actor highlight ongoing disparities in Hollywood, even for celebrated talents like Hounsou, and underscore the need for more equitable treatment and opportunities for minority actors.
