A 23-year-old Ghanaian student, Alfred Okyere, who moved to Canada in 2024, was fatally stabbed at his workplace shortly after starting a part-time job at DSI Underground Canada, a mining supply company.
The incident reportedly involved his co-worker, 53-year-old Troy Francis Leclair, who is now facing murder charges.
Alfred had been staying with his elder sister, Lydia Obeng, since arriving in Canada. Speaking to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Ms. Obeng revealed that the police informed her Alfred was stabbed 17 times in just 30 seconds during an altercation.
“They told us there was an altercation, and he was stabbed 17 times in 30 seconds,” she recounted. “Alfred was a calm person—never troublesome. He had just started this job last Wednesday and left home around 2:40 p.m., took an Uber, and went to work.”
Ms. Obeng added that when police initially came to her door, she couldn’t believe Alfred could be involved in such a tragedy. “His name never crossed my mind when I saw the police. He was so calm and not one to get into trouble. It wasn’t until they brought his bag, his lunch, and a document we had taken to SGI that I realized it was him.”
In a statement, the police confirmed that Alfred suffered multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. “Upon arrival, police located a 23-year-old male victim suffering from stab wounds. He was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased,” the statement read.
Despite the police providing some details, Ms. Obeng expressed frustration that the family has not been fully informed about the circumstances surrounding Alfred’s death.
The tragic incident has left Alfred’s family devastated, and the Canadian authorities have charged Mr. Leclair with murder as investigations continue.
