Botswana’s authorities confirmed on Monday that at least nine people have died, including six minors, due to severe flooding across the country. The unprecedented rainfall in the semi-arid nation over the past week has affected more than 5,000 individuals.
In the capital city, Gaborone, the overflow of a local dam led to the destruction of vehicles and partial submerging of properties. Roads, homes, and businesses have sustained significant damage.
While most schools are expected to reopen on Tuesday after several days of closure, officials have announced that electricity and water supplies have been restored.
This flooding comes as Botswana, along with other Southern African nations, is still recovering from the effects of a severe drought.
