Gift Desire Nyirenda, the mayor of Mzuzu City and a prominent figure in the governing Malawi Congress Party (MCP), has been detained on charges of defiling a 14-year-old girl.
According to Mzuzu Police, it was alleged that the victim, a standard seven-year-old girl, was found sleeping in the suspect’s home with his daughter on the night of August 1, 2022 in Nkhorongo, Luwinga.
Nyirenda simply went to the kids’ room to turn out the lights before he departed.
After a short while, he returned to the children’s room and went right to the victim’s bed, where he sexually assaulted the youngster.
He offered the victim 2,000 kwacha, but she turned him down.
But he threatened to murder her if she revealed anything.
He returned to the room on the evening of August 2 but was unsuccessful in raping the child.
But on the evening of August 3, he repeatedly raped the youngster.
With the exception of the first night, the suspect violated the youngster five times over the course of five nights.
The youngster brought up the issue with the maid, who did nothing about it. On August 8, the child brought up the issue with her uncle’s wife, who did nothing.
The suspect’s wife urged the kid to leave the house on August 12.
The young girl gathered her things and went to the Mzuzu Police Station to report the incident.
The woman was examined at the Mzuzu health center, and the results showed that she had been defiled.
The suspect is currently in police custody and could spend 10 years in prison if found guilty of defiling.
