According to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the economy was in dire need of help when he took office on January 7, 2017, and its pace of growth at the time was the lowest in more than 20 years.

But, he claimed, through perseverance, wisdom, and ingenuity, the government was able to turn things around, building an economy that, in the years leading up to the COVID-19, 2017, 2018, and 2019, was among the fastest growing in the world and among the fastest growing in Africa, with an annual Gross Domestic Growth (GDP) growth rate of 7%.

He remarked, “We were the best place to do business in West Africa, and in 2021 we were described as the most desirable destination for investment in West Africa,” when speaking at the 66th Independence Day celebration on Monday, March 6.

“Over the following twenty-two (22) months of my term, I’ll be working to get the economy back to the point of rapid development that it was prior to COVID and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. I’m making a solemn commitment to you, my fellow Ghanaians, and I’m determined to keep it.

“Before I take my seat, I want to let you know that, as promised at the Founders Day Celebration last year, on March 14, 2023, I will bestow national honors on several of our countrymen who stood out in the struggle against the COVID-19 pandemic. With their deeds, they contributed to the preservation of our population and brought Mother Ghana recognition on a global scale.”
