Officials of the La Nkwantanang Madina Municipal Assembly (LaNMA) have embarked on a demolition exercise of portions of the Ritz junction area near the Madina-Adenta Highway.
On Wednesday dawn at around 4 am, two earth-moving vehicles and a team of police officers moved on site and were seen demolishing the structures in the area.
The area mostly has kiosks and container shops. It is unclear if the residents were given prior notice ahead of the demolition.
One of the residents of the area said to Citi News, “They [LaNMA] said they wanted to clear this place. They said they wanted the land so they will destroy any kiosk, any container, and every structure they find here.”
But one other onlooker described the area as a den of thieves and expressed satisfaction with the demolition.
“I am very happy. They should scatter everywhere. The way things are going it is very bad. Most times you come here in the night and people collect your phone and collect your money. Everybody should leave. That is what I want.”
