A twelve-man jury at the Criminal Court “A” have brought down a guilty verdict against a Liberian Woman – Issa Kanneh for trafficking over ten Liberian women to the Western Asian State of Oman.

Ms. Kanneh is the first to be convicted under the reversed Human Trafficking law which provides for a minimum jail sentence of 20 years, with restitution to victims for injuries and damages.

Under the new Human Trafficking Law, properties of the convicts and properties knowingly used in the execution of the crime can be confiscated and auctioned by the court to settle restitution to victims.

Lately in 2021, the Government of Liberia through the National Anti-human Trafficking Taskforce launched the amendment to the New Ant-Human Trafficking law of Liberia.

The Ant-Human Trafficking law was launched on Friday October 29, 2021 and handed over to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to be printed into a handbill.

Several Liberian women have fallen prey to what seems to be an intricate web of human trafficking with some currently stuck in the Arab Republic of Oman where they are said to be subjected to various forms of inhumane treatments.

One of the victims who was recently repatriated by the Government of Liberia provided a chilling account of how she was taken to a hospital in Muscat, Oman and was subjected to a surgical procedure without her consent, even though she wasn’t sick.

The victim recounted during a recent stakeholders meeting with the National Anti-Human Trafficking Taskforce of Liberia that while in Oman, her employer, who is a lady took her to a hospital and instructed the doctors to carry on a surgical operation on her.

The alleged human trafficking victim further assumed that having gone through the surgical procedure she suspected that something was extracted from her body taking into consideration the number of operation marks left on her lower abdomen.

She also observed that the operation marks on her lower abdomen may have been an extraction of one of her kidneys which she alleged was used to replenish those of her boss’s mother-in-law who she claimed has been suffering from kidney failure and was on regular dialysis.
