The victorious candidate, William Ruto, is accused of being the victim of systemic cheating by the lawyers for senior Kenyan politician Raila Odinga, who is contesting the election results. They point to irregularities in the final tally as evidence.
The Supreme Court heard arguments from Mr. Odinga’s attorneys on Wednesday over their attempt to overturn Mr. Ruto’s victory, citing egregious election irregularities.
They testified before the court that unauthorized access by both known and unknowing parties compromised the transmission mechanism for the results forms.
As a result, voter information was manipulated during transmission between polling places and the national tallying center.
They also claimed that the postponement of the election and technological glitches on election day had deprived voters in Mr. Odinga’s support areas of their right to vote.
Later on Wednesday, Mr. Ruto’s legal team will present its response. Later on, the five additional petitioners will make their cases as well.
In the meantime, a recount of ballots from 15 of the 46,000 polling places is being conducted outside the courthouse in accordance with a Tuesday Supreme Court ruling.
