According to Virginia Palmer, the U.S. ambassador to Ghana, Ghana will send the second-highest number of students to the United States in the 2020–21 school year, only behind Nigeria.
She stated: “We have 4,200 students studying in 630 various education institutions in the United States in just the previous year alone.” during the start of the 2022 EducationUSA College Fair in Accra.
“And Ghana is the second-highest sender of students to the United States, second only to Nigeria. And it does bother me to say that,” she added.
About 40 American universities and colleges participated in the event to network with potential students.
The mission of the 450 centers that make up the EducationUSA network, financed by the US government, is to inform qualified individuals about approved US colleges and universities and to assist them in becoming competitive applicants.
Students who are applying to study in the US were reassured by Ambassador Virginia Palmer that despite the backlogs, they will receive their visas quickly to prevent delays.
“EducationUSA advisors in Kumasi-based centers, they have helped the students that come with information about US universities and to access US$7 million in bursaries and scholarships for studying in the United States.
“So, I encourage Ghanaian students to come and talk to the advisors. Ghana is also among the top 25 countries globally to send graduate students to the United States. The first statistics were undergraduate students. Lot of very distinguished Ghanaian scholars doing graduate work in the United States,” Palmer said.
