The 55 members of the National Assembly as well as the mayors of the six municipalities of So Tomé were up for election on Sunday.

Votes are also cast in Prncipe for the National Assembly and the autonomous region’s administration.

The 215,000-person archipelago is seen as an example of parliamentary democracy in Africa.

Eleven political parties and movements are running for office.

For the first time, one MP is chosen from each constituency by 14,692 people who live in ten nations in Europe and Africa.

The six districts on the island of So Tomé and Prncipe select the remaining 53 representatives.

The Democratic Convergence Party (PCD), the Union for Democracy and Development (UDD), and the Democratic Movement for Change are in collaboration with Jorge Bom Jesus to form the current government (MDFM).

The Independent Citizens’ Movement, also referred to as the movement of Caué, a district in the south of the nation, with brothers António and “Nino” Monteiro, is currently running in coalition with the Party of National Unity (PUN), from the Autonomous Region of Prncipe, and wants to increase the number of MPs after it made its debut in parliament with two elected in 2018.

One hundred international observers are keeping an eye on the election.
