According to reports, Nigerians are no longer eligible for visas on arrival in Ethiopia.

Participants predicted that the restriction, which became effective on Tuesday, October 4, would cause some difficulties for travelers to Ethiopia.

The management of Ethiopian Airlines, the country’s flag carrier, reportedly informed travel partners of the recent change, according to Daily Trust.

Before the aforementioned ban, travelers from Nigeria traveling through Ethiopia or arriving at Bole International Airport in Addis Abeba could easily secure a visa on arrival (VOA).

According to the publication, a memo sent by Ethiopian Airlines to travel partners read;

โ€œPlease be informed that effective immediate No More Visa on Arrival for Nigerian citizens.

โ€œPassengers are to obtain their visa at the Ethiopian Embassy in Abuja before traveling. Please note that: Passengers transiting overnight in Addis Ababa are not affected by the ban. E.g. passengers having layover in Addis to travel the next morning to Zanzibar, Seycheles, Lusaka, Lilongwe, Harare, Cape Town, etc are not affected by the ban and do not need transit visa for their trips.โ€

However, Mrs. Susan Akporiaye, president of the National Association of Nigerian Travel Agencies (NANTA), informed the publication that the information she received from a top Ethiopian Airlines official indicated that the matter had not yet been established.

A travel agent commented on the situation and said:

โ€œWe are still studying the development. We have reached out to some officials of Ethiopian Airlines, though they did not deny it but they said it is not confirmed yet.โ€
