The World Health Organization has issued a warning that a poisonous batch of cough medicine linked to the deaths of numerous children in the Gambia may have been exported to other nations.

According to WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the organization on Wednesday issued a medical product alert for cough and cold syrups manufactured by Maiden Pharmaceuticals Ltd. in India, which may have contributed to 66 child deaths and acute kidney injuries in the small West African country.

The WHO reported that a lab test revealed “unacceptable quantities” of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol in four tainted Maiden products. Tedros stated that the international health organization is working with the business and Indian officials to undertake additional investigations while advising other nations to stop using the therapies.

Calls to the pharmaceutical company’s corporate headquarters in New Delhi went unanswered, while emails sent to the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization, India’s medical regulatory body, requesting comment received no immediate response.

The deaths bring attention to India’s $42 billion pharmaceutical sector, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi has aggressively marketed as the “pharmacy of the world.”

Numerous low-cost, generic medications that are available in American pharmacies and hundreds of other nations worldwide come from India. However, medical products made in the country of South Asia have recently been linked to a number of manufacturing problems, including the shipment of contaminated heart medications.

Closely-held According to its website, Maiden Pharma has been producing and supplying medicinal products for more than 30 years. These nations include many in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Russia.
