The market town of Kousseri in Cameroon’s Far North Province, which is near to the Chadian border, has been experiencing significant flooding over the past week.
Here, the Logone and Chari rivers meet, and both are experiencing very high water levels that are expected to continue rising.
Although sandbags were being used to try to stop the floods, it was already too late for many areas of Kousseri.
Homes in the town have been inundated, and residents were spotted lugging belongings through knee-deep mud while walking through the river.
Families that were left homeless constructed improvised shelters on dry, higher land using sticks and sheets.
“I’m in serious trouble,” told Kousseri resident Bouba Vira, whose family have been forced to abandon their home.
Massive damage was caused by heavy rains in August, and now the situation has worsened once again as a result of increasing flood levels.
The rivers Logone and Chari divide Cameroon from its neighbor Chad, which this week declared a state of emergency to help address the problem.
