In 2022, more than 18 tonnes of gold are expected to be produced, according to the Sudanese Mineral Resources Company.

According to the authority, it was the most productive period in Sudan’s history for the mineral industry.

In a press release issued on Monday (Jan. 2), Engineer Alaeldin Ali, the director of the general administration for supervision and control of production companies, stated that productivity had increased by one tonne and 611 kilogrammes since the highest production in the previous period, which was realised in 2019.

The concession firms and businesses that deal with traditional mining waste produced the 18 tonnes and 637 kilogrammes of gold that was produced in 2022.

Over 50% of Sudan’s gold is thought to be smuggled out of the nation, and the revenues are regularly used to fund the civil war there.

In March 2022, the Central Bank of Sudan issued a new circular to banks and relevant authorities that outlawed the export of gold by government organisations, foreigners, people, and businesses—with the exception of mining concession corporations.

The circular also restricted the Central Bank of Sudan’s participation to gold purchases made solely for reserve-building purposes.
