Five people were slain in a raid by extremists with ties to al-Qaida on a regional government office in the capital of Somalia on Sunday (Jan. 22), according to the administration.
Abdulkadir Adan, the organization’s founder, told The Associated Press that his crew evacuated 16 injured people from the area.
The terrorist organization al-Shabab took responsibility for the attack on the Banadir Regional Administration’s Mogadishu headquarters.
An employee at the headquarters claimed that the incident started with a suicide bombing before gunmen entered and engaged security personnel in firefight.
Most of the employees, according to the staff member Mustafa Abdulle, were saved by security personnel.
Attacks by Al-Shabab happen often in Mogadishu.
The federal government declared “total war” on the extremist organization last year and has since retaken a number of the villages in central and southern Somalia that the fighters had previously held.
