Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah was announced as the sole candidate for the Swapo party in next year’s elections by Namibian President Hage Geingob on Saturday.

The president urged party members to back Ms. Nandi-Ndaitwah when official campaigns get off the next year in remarks to the party’s highest organ.

While serving as the nation’s deputy prime minister, Ms. Nandi-Ndaitwah is the party’s vice president.

โ€œElections took place, we have the results that we are going to have one candidate only, that will be comrade Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and we will campaign and we have a person who will lead us,” President Geingob said.

Also, he urged Swapo members to avoid forming factions in response to the results of the party nominations.

After two terms in office, President Geingob is expected to retire the following year. In November 2014, he won his initial election.

Since Namibia’s independence, Swapo has ruled the nation and continues to be its largest political force.

But, owing of the widespread unemployment and corruption connected to senior party officials, it has recently lost some of its appeal.

At the most recent general election, held in 2019, the party’s two-thirds majority in the legislature was lost. Additionally, it lost control of numerous regional councils as well as the nation’s capital Windhoek, two port cities, Walvis Bay, and Swakopmund.
