Mansa Musa I, also known as Musa Keita I, was a legendary figure in the history of Africa. Born in 1280 in the Mali Empire, he ascended to the throne in 1312, becoming the tenth Mansa (meaning “Emperor” or “King of Kings”) of Mali. The journey itself was a spectacle, as Mansa Musa I traveled with a colossal entourage that included thousands of soldiers, officials, slaves, and a substantial caravan carrying gold, exotic goods, and cultural artifacts.
During his pilgrimage, Mansa Musa I made several stops in prominent cities and trading centers, including Cairo, Alexandria, and Medina. His lavish spending and generous distribution of gold and gifts left a lasting impression on the regions he visited. Mansa Musa I’s generosity was so extravagant that it caused temporary economic disruptions in the areas he passed through. Nevertheless, he enhanced Mali’s reputation as a prosperous and influential empire, garnering the attention and admiration of the world.
Upon his return from the pilgrimage, Mansa Musa I further solidified his empire’s prestige and influence. He embarked on ambitious construction projects, including the famous Djinguereber Mosque and the University of Sankore in the city of Timbuktu. These structures became important centers of learning, attracting scholars, intellectuals, and students from across Africa and beyond. The University of Sankore, in particular, gained renown as a renowned center of Islamic scholarship and a beacon of intellectual advancement.
