Togo Sets Ambitious Target of 10,000 t Fonio Production by 2028

Togo has unveiled an ambitious plan to significantly boost its fonio output in the upcoming years, aiming to achieve a target of precisely 10,000 tonnes by 2028.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Rural Development’s Investment Action Plan for the Fonio Sector (2024-2028), the primary objective is to double the current production to meet both local and international demands.

To implement the plan successfully, the estimated cost is slightly over CFA5 billion, and the State, along with its partners, will work together to mobilize the required funds.

The plan revolves around strategic axes, including enhancing production capacity (Axis 1), supporting processing (Axis 2), effective marketing (Axis 3), and strengthening the organization and governance of the sector (Strategic Axis 4). Additionally, coordination and monitoring-evaluation form another crucial aspect of the plan.

In the previous agricultural campaign of 2022-2023, Togo recorded a fonio production of 4,471 tonnes, establishing fonio as the country’s fifth most consumed cereal, following corn, sorghum, millet, and rice.
