A Senior Military Official in North Darfur Discloses Sudanese Airstrikes Targeting RSF Base Near Libyan Border

In a move aimed at disrupting the flow of military supplies to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) via Libya, the Sudanese army has taken control of the Chevrelet military base situated near the Libyan border, following the outbreak of hostilities on April 19.

Without specifying the nations involved, the Sudanese army has accused certain regional countries of furnishing weapons and ammunition to the RSF through Libya and the Central African Republic.

According to the military official, on August 28 and 29, military aircraft conducted strikes on the Zarq area base in North Darfur state, resulting in the destruction of numerous military vehicles, ammunition stockpiles, and provisions.

The military continues to monitor the influx of substantial weapon shipments from Libyan territory. These weapons are being stored in the Zarq area for potential deployment in military operations in Khartoum and certain Darfur states.

This military operation follows reports since last July suggesting the presence of the RSF’s second-in-command, Abdel Rahim Daglo, in the desert region, historically associated with armed groups in Darfur.

Over recent years, the RSF has invested heavily in the Zarq area, establishing various service facilities, including schools and well-equipped hospitals. Additionally, a substantial military base has been built, with plans for an airport in the region.

In 2022, Hemetti, the RSF leader, visited the Zarq base, conducting an impressive military parade for his forces. Armored military vehicles located in the area were relocated to the capital, Khartoum, shortly before the conflict erupted.

Hemetti’s encouragement of members of his Rizeigat tribe to settle in the region, despite objections from the Zaghawa tribe, has been seen as a challenge to tribal influence. Musa Hilal, a traditional leader of the Mahamid Arab group, also vehemently opposed this initiative, viewing it as a direct threat to his tribal authority.
