A 58-Year-Old Man in Lusaka Faces a Surprising Situation as Former Girlfriends Clash in Court Over Property Ownership
In a startling turn of events, a 58-year-old man from Lusaka found himself in an unexpected predicament when two of his alleged former girlfriends took their dispute to the Matero Local Court, each claiming ownership of one of his houses.
Fridah Chibwe initiated the legal action, seeking reconciliation with Theresa Mwanza over a piece of land. Fridah explained to the court that she had been married to John Chibwe, with whom she has five children. Theresa, on the other hand, was the second wife in the relationship and shared three children with John.
Fridah asserted that the disputed house rightfully belonged to her, emphasizing that she possessed the original title deeds. She stated, “Your honor, I brought this matter to court because she has been persistently demanding the property’s documents, which belong to me. My husband purchased this house for me and our children, not for her.”
In contrast, Theresa, armed with photocopies of property documents, contended that the house was hers, as her husband had acquired it for her three children.
Upon witnessing the intense verbal exchange between the two women, Magistrate Harriet Mulenga summoned John Chibwe, the man they both claimed as their husband.
John Chibwe clarified that he was a married man but had never wed either of the two women; they were merely his former girlfriends. He acknowledged having children with both of them and expressed astonishment at the courtroom dispute. He mused, “These two women were just my friends, and I have children with both of them. I am a married man. It’s quite shocking that Fridah and Mwanza are quarreling over my property while I am still alive. What will happen if I pass away?”
