Egypt’s electoral authority said on Monday that the country will hold its presidential election from December 10 to 12, 2023.
The winner will be announced on December 18, according to Egypt’s National Election Authority head Walid Hassan Hamza.
“The final results of the presidential elections will be announced and published in the official newspaper no later than January 16th. Therefore, the entire election process will conclude before January 17th, 2024.”
Although yet to formally announce his candidacy, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi is widely expected to win reelection.
- Economic crisis
Experts had predicted that Sisi would move the 2024 election forwards in order to avoid the potential escalation of tensions caused by the anticipated transfer to a flexible currency rate.
The votes occur as the nation struggles with an economic crisis, with recent months seeing a sharp rise in inflation and the currency losing half of its value since March 2022.
Since the beginning of the year, the government has maintained a fixed exchange rate.
- Decade-long reign
Since his initial election in 2014, Sisi, 68, has been in charge. 2018 saw him defeat one of his own political allies once more.
After the constitution was changed to allow him to run for a third term in 2019, he further solidified his position of authority. The modifications increased presidential terms from four to six years, allowing Sisi, should he win, to rule until 2030.
