The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) refutes claims of any military partnership with Russia, despite reports circulating in state-controlled Russian media suggesting otherwise.

According to Russian news agency Tass, discussions were underway between the two nations regarding a potential agreement encompassing military training and various cooperation formats, including joint exercises and military visits.

However, the Ministry of Communication and the Media in the DRC issued a statement asserting that no such military cooperation agreement exists between Russia and the DRC at present. They clarified that the media reports likely referenced a previous proposal initiated in 1999, which has since stalled due to lack of follow-up from Russia.

Amidst internal challenges, including combating the M23 rebel group in North Kivu province, the DRC emphasizes its focus on addressing instability and insecurity within its borders. Despite denying military ties with Russia, reports suggest ongoing negotiations with Ukraine and Russia for military equipment to aid in combating rebel factions in the east.

Beyond military affairs, the DRC and Russia have explored other collaborations, such as a proposed pipeline project involving Lukoil and Congolese oil company, Sociรฉtรฉ Nationale Des Pรฉtroles Du Congo.

Meanwhile, concerns have been raised about the involvement of European mercenaries in the DRC conflict, with accusations from Rwanda alleging cooperation between the DRC and European mercenaries. The presence of foreign armed groups, including those with ties to Europe, adds complexity to the ongoing conflict.

With South Africa leading regional peacekeeping efforts in eastern DRC, the situation remains dynamic, highlighting the multifaceted challenges faced by the country and its efforts to maintain stability amidst internal and external pressures.
