Amid ongoing violence and political instability in Haiti, repeated school closures and mass migration have left children in a state of suffering. The situation in the national capital, Port-au-Prince, remains dire, with gangs exerting control over key infrastructure and tens of thousands of people fleeing the city.

According to the United Nations, half of the approximately 360,000 displaced individuals are children, highlighting the impact of the crisis on the younger population. Educators in Port-au-Prince emphasize the significant toll this situation is taking on the children’s development, with schools often closing during protests.

Despite the challenges, some determined young people in Haiti continue to pursue education. For 19-year-old Keslay Antoine, the dream of becoming a tech entrepreneur serves as motivation to keep studying. Others, like 20-year-old Iden Joseph, have had to put their education on hold due to financial constraints, resorting to selling homemade lunches in the market while still harboring aspirations for a brighter future.

Meanwhile, maternity centers in the country continue to provide essential services, aiming to address Haiti’s high infant mortality rate. Organizations like Second Mile Haiti play a crucial role in ensuring access to prenatal care and support for newborns and their families, contributing to better chances of survival.

Since the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in July 2021, Haiti has faced further instability, with gangs and criminal groups filling the power vacuum. Social unrest has escalated, exacerbated by the failure to hold scheduled elections. Armed gangs have targeted public institutions, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry.

In response to mounting pressure, Henry announced his intention to resign once a transitional presidential council is established, indicating ongoing challenges in Haiti’s path towards stability and development.
